I have to admit I'm not sure that I know what 'single column format' means..

It is a page layout which is single column, as found in the Jerusalem Bibles and Little Rock Catholic Study Bible. Most Bibles, have the text in two columns.

YES, YES, YES!

Bibles should look like books to be read, not dictionaries to be consulted. The worst is two-column, verse-by-verse, center-column reference, which appears identical to a Funk & Wagnall's.
