The 19th volume in the popular Bible study series leads readers through a penetrating study of the Book of Joshua using the biblical text itself and the Church's own guidelines for understanding the Bible.
Ample notes accompany each page, providing fresh insights by renowned Bible teachers Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch, as well as time-tested interpretations from the Fathers of the Church. They provide rich historical, cultural, geographical or theological information pertinent to the Old Testament book - information that bridges the distance between the biblical world and our own.
It also includes Topical Essays, Word Studies and Charts. The Topical Essays explore the major themes of Joshua, often relating them to the teachings of the Church. Speaking of commentaries, have you looked at the New Collegeville Bible commentary series? There are separate books (or one combined book) for everything in the NT, and the OT is in progress.
(Of course, I'm plugging it because I know some of the authors.)
Jason,
Yes, I own the commentaries on Isaiah, Psalms I and II, as well as the New Testament compilation. Funny how they have the SJB covers!
Speaking of Commentaries, do you happen to know how much of a difference there is between the 2cd and the 3rd editions of the New Jerome Bible Commentary? And do you have any thoughts on The Oxford Bible Commentary?
Many thanks!
Pax,
John
John,
The Oxford one is a helpful academic resource edited by Bruce Metzger. You can find it for fiairly cheap at a number of places so I definitely recommend it. I don't have the 2nd edition of the NJBC so I can't comment. My guess is that a number of the essays are updated to reflect some of the recent finds and discoveries in archaeology and language.
Thanks Timothy,
As you mentioned, I came across an Oxford Commentary which seemed to be very reasonably priced. I have the 68 Jerome and noticed an 89 New Jerome that was also fairly cheap. As the Oxford came out in the early 2000s, I inclined to go with that one. For some reason the 3rd edition of the New Jerome is only available in paperback, which is a no go for me.
Thanks for the info!
Pax,
John
Does anybody know if they planning on having the entire OT covered by these booklets (like I think they did with the NT) before releasing it all together?
I can't imagine they would, considering the plan was to have the full one volume edition ready in the next year or two.
