"On Englishing the Bible" Giveaway
The fine people at Baronius Press have provided me three brand new copies of On Englishing the Bible by Msgr. Ronald Knox to give away to my loyal readers. As you know, this collection of essays by Msgr. Knox is not available for sale, but instead comes bundled with the newly published Baronius Press Knox Bible. In this 64 page paperback edition, Msgr. Knox "describes his account of the ordeal, which manages to be both illuminating and full of his wit. Anyone wishing to know more about Knox's translation – and the problems involved in rendering the sacred Scriptures into the vernacular – will be fascinated to hear from the translator himself how he tackled this mammoth project." All of my quotes from the "Knox on Translation" series of posts comes from this delightful little book. It seems good to have a contest like this, since February 17th was the 125th anniversary of Msgr. Knox's birthday.

Revelation 3:20: "See where I stand at the door, knocking; if anyone listens to my voice and opens the door, I will come in to visit him, and take my supper with him, and he shall sup with me."
This has always been my favorite verse! To me, it illustrates how salvation is a free gift from God that we can accept or refuse.

I too have three copies of this book....it's a good read....
John 21:16 "And again, a second time, he asked him, Simon, son of John, dost thou care for me? Yes, Lord, he told him, thou knowest well that I love thee. He said to him, Tend my shearlings." I found this rendering fascinating because shearlings are only a year old and in need of great care and the need to be tended.
The 29th chapter of Jeremiah has always been a source of strength for me. Specifically I love the way Knox renders Jeremiah 29:11 "I have not lost sight of my plan for you, the Lord says, and it is your welfare I have in mind, not your undoing; for you, too, I have a destiny and a hope."
When I read this I feel God's voice speaking to me more than any other translation of the text. There is a feeling of reassurance communicated by this translation and that He always has the best for me in his mind that I should trust.

One of my favorite passages was today's reading from John where Jesus instructs the disciples on his new commandment to love one another. Knox renders it very smoothly.
I have a new commandment to give you, that you are to love one another; that your love for one another is to be like the love I have borne you. The mark by which all men will know you for my disciples will be the love you bear one another.
