New Roman Missal

The USCCB has recently added a site to their main website which shows the changes that will take place when the new Roman Missal (in English) is implemented in the next few years. While many of the changes are subtle, they ultimately make the English more faithful to the Latin, and, in many cases, the Bible. I have heard praises and complaints on both sides of this issue, but I prefer to stay out of it for the most part. However, I do think having a more faithful rendering of the Latin original is a very good thing, even if it takes some time to get use to.
To see some of the most obvious changes, you can check them out here.
The date for full implementation has yet to be determined, but it looks like either Advent 2010 or 2011.
Another thing to consider is that very soon the USCCB will hopefully be completed with the NAB revision. This means that the Old Testament readings will be slightly different, plus the responsorial Psalm will be from the revised Grail Psalms.
So, lots of changes with the language in the Mass.

This is going to be a mess. Already quiet congregations where people hardly participate are going to be even more quiet.

Keith,

That may be, but hopefully most places will do a better job of preparing parishoners for the changes well in advance. Although I wasn't around when the Novos Ordo Mass began under Paul VI, I have heard from a good number of people alive back then that everything just changed from one weekend to the next, without much catechesis. Although I am sure this did not happen everywhere, hopefully it will be different this time.

Because, as we all know, the spiritual health of a congregation is directly proportionate to how much noise it makes.

I think the Bishops have learned their lesson about how to impliment these changes. I think there will be lots of press releases as we get closer and there will be handouts and discussions in all parishes. I agree with you Tim, some of the changes are taken right out of the Bible. People that I know that attend Mass in Spanish say that the Spanish Liturgy follows the Latin much closer than the English, so these changes will bring the Roman Missal closer together in the various languages which is the goal of the Vatican. Many people hate change and they will complain, even if they don't know what they are complaining about. I also look forward to the revised NAB since I use it so much with Bible study and RCIA.
