National Bible Week 2016

From November 13-19, 2016, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops invites families, parishes, schools, and other Catholic groups to participate in National Bible Week in celebration of the 51st Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum. This year's theme, "The Bible: A Book of Mercy," builds on this year's Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Head on over to the USCCB page where there are a number of resrouces, including a daily email/text from Bp. Robert Barron which you can sign up for.  Also, USCCB Publishing is providing a 20% discount on the Gift and Personal Editions of their NABREs with promo code: BIBLE.

  1. Even with the discount, it is still $14 for shipping, that's ridiculous, I could almost buy another Bible for what they are charging for shipping.

  2. Biblical Catholic,

It is ridiculously expensive. I bought the Personal Edition just after it came out. It is one of the more attractive Catholic Bibles out there in English. It is a bit on the large and thick side as Bibles go. For a "Personal Bible" it is unwieldy and does NOT lend itself to being carried around. And, even though it has over 1900 pages, the footnotes are tiny! The New Catholic Answer Bible, by contrast, with all the same footnotes and intros and added apologetics inserts, only needs 1500 pages because it's cut at a larger page size page! It's noticeably thinner than the Personal Edition. The NACB is more portable (lighter) even though the pages are larger format. The footnotes are larger too. The biblical text appears slightly larger in the Personal Edition. I wish the two bibles could be mashed together. I love the Personal Edition's use of red for chapter numbers and headings (which are larger than in the NACB) and "on-the-page" book title tabs. That's quite attractive.

On another note: Did ANYONE hear about National Bible Week from their pastors in the pulpit this past Sunday? ANYONE at all? I bet not. Yet another opportunity wasted, and I am not blaming the pastors. They never knew about it. The USCCB has never been known for being good at communicating with Catholic dioceses of priests in the parishes.

  4. Even with the 20% discount USCCB shipping is so high to the West US ($14.95 for 1 book) that it's much cheaper via Amazon Prime.
