So, I have been spending some time in prayer the past few months discerning the future of this blog. A couple weeks back I decided to put an end to it. However, I have reconsidered. I received some encouragement in prayer, as well as some kind words given to me by a number of readers of this blog. So, I am going to slowly bring this blog back. The issue is that I am going to need some help. Work is extremely busy currently and will remain so for the rest of the year. Home life is busy too with two kids and the newborn. So, I am going to need some help. I will gladly accept some regular contributions from you, my wonderful readers, for the next few months. If you are interested, please let me know.
Cool. Then I will keep on following your blog.
ReplyDeleteHuzzah! So there's hope for obsessing over this blog!
ReplyDelete(It really is the most referenced. Do you have any idea how often this comes up on Google searches on Catholic Bibles?)
Hi Timothy, Great to see a post.
ReplyDeleteI would like to offer to do a post on the New Zealand (NZ) edition of the Poverty and Justice Bible, which uses the Catholic edition of the NRSV and is sponsored by Caritas NZ, the Bible Society NZ and the Church here.
"Using the Catholic NRSV translation, the Poverty and Justice Bible also includes a unique study section: At the core – developed with The Catholic Institute and derived from the New Zealand Year 12 Religious Education curriculum and from Caritas resources. These unique studies will help you better understand Church teaching on social justice issues. The New Zealand Poverty and Justice Bible has been granted the Imprimatur of Cardinal John Dew and a personal endorsement from Cardinal Peter Turkson - President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace." https://www.povertyandjustice.nz.
Hallelujah! I can't tell you how much I have missed your blog and your follower's comments. I have often checked back to research a bible review or read old posts. So glad you are back. 😁
ReplyDeleteThank you. Just sent me an email when you are ready.
ReplyDeleteI've been checking this page a few times a week! So glad to see you back in action! I would love to help out. But great to see you buddy!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you decided to continue, Timothy! This blog has been so informative to me. I'm newer to bible study than some of your veteran readers, and I've learned so much from their comments. I'd be happy to do a guest post if I could be helpful, though. I'd be especially interested in doing a review of the REB translation. It has been my primary bible for over a year now, and I've been relishing it. It's such a hidden gem that gets far less attention than it justly deserves.
ReplyDeleteYes! Would love something on the REB!
DeleteGreat news, glad to see you back. God bless you and help you with all you do. Amen
ReplyDeleteJust received an email from Scepter Publishers for Pocket New Testament -Revised Standard Version: Catholic Edition: https://scepterpublishers.org/products/pocket-new-testament?utm_source=College+Bound+Pocket+RSV+New+Testament+Email+Blast+09%2F29%2F2016&utm_campaign=The+Pocket+RSV+New+Testament&utm_medium=email
Timothy, I was about to tell you about the new Scepter pocket RSV/CE, but Kenneth Massey beat me to it!
ReplyDeleteI actually have a copy. I was recently in a Catholic bookstore, saw it, and plunked down the money to get the leather (or faux leather?) copy with gilt edges, and red ribbon.
Verse numbers appear in the margins of the text. There are two appendices: 1) containing the notes from the RSV/CE New Testament. I assume these are the same you would find in any Ignatius RSV/CE first edition; 2) a neat table comparing differences between RSV and RSV/CE textual renderings. The info is the same (as far as I know) as in the Ignatius, but it is presented in an actual table with boxes unlike what appears in the Ignatius. Stylistically it is more attractive in the pocket edition.
This is a very attractive edition and well worth the money if you like the RSV/CE. The fact that you can get it in red, blue or black is pretty cool too. The gilt edge one may only come in black (leather?), however.
It has no new permissions whatsoever so I am assuming that everything in it is taken right from the 1965/66 RSV/CE we're all familiar with.
I have a battered Bible Societies New Testament & Psalms pocket edition (with the 1971 RSV text). It's measurements are: 4.75 inches long x 3.5 inches wide x .5 inches thick.
The Scepter pocket edition's measurements: 5 and 3/8ths long x 3.5 inches wide x .5 inches thick. A true pocket New Testament! It's just a bit bigger than my iPhone.
Now if only Scepter would produce one that also included Psalms and Proverbs!

ReplyDeleteVladimir and Kenneth,
ReplyDeleteI posted above the specs of the new pocket RSV. I will be getting some review copies in the mail in the next week or so. Please feel free to comment above. Thank you!
I would gladly help anyway I can.
ReplyDeleteHow can i be of service to this great apostolate?
I am always interested in guest posts on various scriptural topics.
DeleteThis is WONDERFUL! I'm happy to help in any way I can!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Timothy! Depsite joining many bible groups on facebook during your blog sabatical, I realized that us Catholics don't have any other site on the web that fills the need that your blog does! You are appreciated by many!
ReplyDeleteI have three large print ( and large sized Bibles) that I have purchased since you went on sabbatical: The St. Joseph edition giant print NABRE, the Jerusalem Bible (Salvador Dali illustrated) edition and the Ignatius Large Print RSV-2CE. I can do reviews on any or all three of these!
ReplyDeleteRolf,
DeleteThe Dali one would be great!
Glad to see you're bringing the blog back! I've been Googling various topics here, and just happened to check the home page out. It looks like I've got some catching up to do!
ReplyDeleteJust re-checked my old bookmark to find:
