Coming Soon: ICSB 1&2 Samuel

This volume in the popular Bible study series leads readers through a penetrating study of the Books of 1 & 2 Samuel using the biblical text itself and the Church's own guidelines for understanding the Bible.

Ample notes accompany each page, providing fresh insights by renowned Bible teachers Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch, as well as time-tested interpretations from the Fathers of the Church. They provide rich historical, cultural, geographical or theological information pertinent to the Old Testament book - information that bridges the distance between the biblical world and our own.

It also includes Topical Essays, Word Studies and Charts. The Topical Essays explore the major themes of 1 & 2 Samuel, often relating them to the teachings of the Church. The Word Studies explain the background to important Bible terms, while the Charts summarize crucial biblical information "at a glance".

Publication date is May 2nd.  Ordering information here and here.

  1. So what's left now for the complete ICSB?

In my opinion, the ICSB will be the most Orthodox, Traditional English Catholic Study Bible available in one volume since the 19th century Haydock Douay Rheims.

We desperately need a solid traditional Orthodox Catholic study bible in English, and this lovely volume will fill a void that has existed for over a hundred years.

  2. The commentary work on the Minor Prophets for the Ignatius Study Bible was completed in 2008 or so. STILL NOT PUBLISHED!

  3. I've been thinking about this project a lot lately, as a result of working my way through past posts on this blog, and two ideas keep coming to mind.

    1) There's lots of talk in past posts and comments about how Ignatius Press doesn't seem to be making the ICSB a priority and doing what needs to be done to get it onto the market. However, I've spoken to a friend of mine recently who runs a Catholic bookstore and he says these individual copies sell quite well, often in bulk for parish Bible studies, etc. So, is it possible that Ignatius has determined it is simply more financially advantageous to string out these individual volumes? Especially considering how moribund the Catholic Bible market seems to be, maybe they're skeptical of the ability to sell a nice, big study Bible as opposed to these individual volumes? Once they've run the course with these, perhaps the cost of the project will be largely recouped and the final, complete Bible won't have to sell so well to make it worth producing.

    2) If the above is true, that really casts doubt on the idea this could be a single volume study Bible of reasonable size and readability. Most study Bibles I've seen have lots of material in certain parts, like the New Testament, Psalms, Genesis, and then have very little in Chronicles or some of the minor prophets. This is, in a way, unfortunate, because people probably need more help with Chronicles and have less access to other resources (a point that I believe was made at one point by Theophrastus). But, it does make sense for most publishers, I'd imagine. However, if Ignatius is producing enough material on every book of the OT to justify these individual volumes, I'm not sure they can pull it all together in a reasonably sized study Bible.

    My two cents.

  4. Since I intend to buy it as an ebook, I don't really care if it is ever published in a single volume. I own the ICSB NT ebook, and I am buying the individual OT volumes as they are released.

As far as I can tell, the OT books that have been released so far are Genesis, Exodus,Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Daniel. Job, Ecclesiastics, Song of Solomon, Proverbs, and now 1,2 Samuel, barely even 1/3 of the OT text. There's a long way to go.

  5. By the way, my fellow ebook enthusiasts, both the Ignatius Didache Bible and the Catholic Study Bible 4th edition are available for kindle.

  6. @Biblical Catholic, I wish the Didache Bible was available in Kindle "print replica" form, that'd make for a much easier and more pleasant reading experience.

  7. Does anyone know when each of these new volumes are added to the Lighthouse Media/Truth and Life apps? Judges and Ruth have still not been added. Neither has Joshua. And those volumes have been out for several months now.
