“He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.”
-Mark 8:34-35 (NABRE)
A good reminder with so much instant gratification out there.
ReplyDeleteIs he saying that taking a cross means being willing to put one's life at stake for the sake of the gospel and that we would be raised on the last day when he said we will save our lives?
ReplyDeleteWhat im trying to ask is this: Is this just a teaching on martyrdom?
DeleteI don't think this is just a teaching on martydom. In Luke's Gospel (9:23), it reads “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me". I've always understood it as a dying to oneself and living for the gospel. Although martydom is sometimes required.
DeleteAlso there is the "daily Martyrdom" which we must all face.
