My New Saint John's Bible Print and John 1:14

In honor of my newly framed Giclée print of the Saint John's Bible illumination for John 1:14, The Word Made Flesh by Donald Jackson, I thought I would list how this verse is translated in a number of prominent English versions.  Of course, most fascinating to me, at least, is how each version translates the Greek word σκηνόω.  I prefer what the NABRE and NRSV have done which get closest to the idea that God "pitched his tent/tabernacle" among us.

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." -Douay-Rheims

"And the Word was made flesh, and came to dwell among us; and we had sight of his glory, glory such as belongs to the Father’s only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth." -Knox

"And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth." -NABRE

"And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth." -NRSV

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father." -RSV-CE

"The Word became flesh and made his home among. We have seen his glory, glory like that of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth." -CEB

"The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish." -The Message

  1. I should say that the photo is not the best, due to me taking it late at night, while the kids were sleeping, on my I-Phone. It is actually quite a stunning print which will be placed in a position of prominence in my home.

  2. Cool piece of artwork!

For any Logos/Verbum users out there, one cool trick to get a very quick comparison of translations is to click on a Bible verse (or select a range of verses) and right-click to get a menu. Select the Reference "tab" (other tabs are Lemma, etc.) from the pop-up menu, and choose Power Lookup. The Power Lookup panel will open with that reference pulled from your different Bible translations, commentaries, etc. The translations will all be up top.

  4. The Message reads like a self-help book here, too.

I don't know how it's able to do that everywhere. I daresay 1 Chronicles 1-9 read like Deepak Chopra in Peterson's rendering.

  5. KING JAMES ONLY SELF-REFUTATION

Those who claim that the King James Version of the Bible is the only accurate translation of God's written word invalidate their position by not believing the accuracy of the King James Version itself.

Example: Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.(KJV)

Virtually all "King James Only" advocates assert that "for" in Acts 2:38 has been mistranslated and should have been translated as "because of". For, has not been mistranslated, but the meaning of "for" has been denied in order to claim that water baptism is not essential in order to has sins forgiven.

King James only advocates, by their own admission say Acts 2:38 has been mistranslated.

There is not one translation of the Bible that translates the Greek word "eis" as, because of, in Acts 2:38. Sins are forgiven after water baptism, not before. Men are not baptized because their sins have already been forgiven.

Is it plausible that God waited until 1611 to give men an accurate translation of His written word? Where in the Bible does God say that the only trustworthy translation of My word will be the 1611 version of the King James Bible?

The original King James Version included the 14 apocryphal books. Do King James only advocates use the 14 apocryphal books for faith and practice? I doubt it.

There are many trustworthy translations of God's word. The KJV is just one of them.
