I won't presume to guess where he will be from, but in 2005 I predicted that Benedict XVI would be the last European Pope....and I still think that is going to be true.
Maybe, but more than half of the Church is outside Europe. The heart of the Church has shifted east, to Africa and the Middle East, Europe (where less than 10% of all Catholics attend Mass) is becoming increasingly marginal.
Doing some minor internet research, and I believe one of these men would be the best choice. And I hope the new pope takes one of these names: Leo XIV Clement XV Constantine II Pius XIII
There are a few names I believe would be "status quo" - not disastors, but not all that great either: Cardinal Ouellet Cardinal Llovera Cardinal Scola Cardinal Scherer Cardinal Sandri
And there are a few I think would be disaterous if elected: Cardinal Bertone Cardinal Schonborn Cardinal Turkson
The "dark horse" is Cardinal Dziwisz. Being JP2's personal secretary and assistant for over 20 years gives him an insider's experience. He is rarely mentioned, if at all, as a papal candidate, but I say keep your eye on him. If anyone were to take the name John Paul III, it would be Dziwisz.
SInce the new pope, if everything goes according to plan, will be installed in time for Holy Week, I think the most fitting regnal name for him to take would be "PASCHAL III".
Some interesting trivia. Pope Paschal I did not pick that name as a tribute to Eastertime, but rather it was an attempt to Latinize his first name, Pasquale.

ReplyDeleteI think that the next Pope will come from Europe.
ReplyDeleteOver half (62) cardinal electors are European.
John Blake.
