However, this is not due to the Church's lack of encouragement. Just look at all the documents over the past 100 years from the USCCB and Rome on Scripture. Second, in a Christmas discussion with Protestant relatives one of their complaints against Catholics was that we do not read and study the Bible "personally" - as a personal and intimate project.
